Training Details

This training will take place all day on Friday November 12th on the 12th floor of the Jackson T. Stephens Spine and Neurosciences Institute. The training is broken into three hands-on sessions, which build on the participants skills. Experienced users can feel free to attend only the sessions that are of interest to them. The training is mostly composed of hands-on activities so participants will need to bring their own computers.

Training Activities

The first session covers remotely connecting to a Linux server and manipulating files from a command line.

  • Connecting to a server with ssh
  • Using man(ual) pages
  • Creating directories and manipulating files
  • Moving data between your computer and the server

The second session covers editing and creating basic shell scripts to allow multiple tasks to be performed.

  • Writing basic shell scripts
  • Running and editing shell scripts
  • More advanced features of shell scripts

The third session covers executing jobs on the actual HPC cluster.

  • Running a trivial job
  • Running a real job
  • Running many jobs at once
